Every Thursday night throughout the summer, Chicagoans enjoyed a different flavor of World Music as part of the Millennium Park summer concert series. Many picnicked and relaxed while enjoying sounds from across the globe. Music-lovers of different tastes relished in everything from a salsa music to a Haitian orchestra, from a Ukrainian accordion player to a Brazilian jazz combo, while gaining appreciation for different styles and types of music and performances.

We have preserved these audio snapshots as a way to welcome immigrants and visitors to one of Chicago’s more unheralded treasures: A shared summer in the city.

Enjoy the slideshow that captures some of the sights and sounds of an evening in the park and then click on the photos below to hear “snapshots” of picnickers with rich stories about their immigrant backgrounds and experiences. We hope you enjoy exploring the Summer Snapshots as much as we did. Please share your stories with us as well.
